The College of Nurses of Ontario is the governing body for Registered Nurses (RNs) and Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) in the province of Ontario.
All RNs and RPNs practicing within Ontario are members of the College of Nurses of Ontario. A valid certificate of registration from the College is required of all nurses who wish to practice in Ontario, and perform the procedures in the Controlled Acts that are authorized for nursing.
The nursing profession has been self-regulating in Ontario since 1963. Self-regulation is a privilege granted to those professions that have shown they can put the interests of the public ahead of their own professional interests. It recognizes that Ontario’s nurses have the knowledge and expertise to regulate themselves as individual practitioners, and to regulate their profession through the College.
The College fulfills its role by:
• Establishing requirements for entry to practice
• Articulating and promoting practice standards
• Administering its quality assurance program
• Enforcing standards of practice and conduct
Through provincial and territorial legislation, CNO is accountable for public protection by ensuring Registered Nurses are safe, competent and ethical practitioners.
The College of Physiotherapists of Ontario is the regulator for the profession of physiotherapy. The College regulates and ensures the ongoing improvement of the practice of Physiotherapists (also known as Physical Therapists), to protect and serve the public interest. This means that the College protects patients’ rights to safe, competent and ethical care; by helping Physiotherapists maintain the standards of practice of the profession; and by also holding them accountable for their conduct and practice.
The College of Physiotherapists of Ontario sets rules and develops programs to ensure that members of the physiotherapy profession practice in your best interests. Physiotherapists are accountable to the College for the quality of care they provide to their patients and their professional conduct.
